At first glance, the original outhouse looked like something you’d find abandoned at a hunting camp in the woods outside Troy, Montana. Surprisingly, it was still functional and being used regularly. When I was asked to build a new one, I was excited. I had never built an outhouse before, but I had a solid plan in mind to construct something rugged enough to last another 50 years.
Then the project requirements changed.
Instead of building a heavy, permanent structure, I was asked to make it lightweight so it could be moved when the pit eventually fills. That meant balancing durability with portability — not always an easy combination.
Designing a Lightweight but Strong Outhouse
The goal was simple:

I carefully framed the structure to maintain structural integrity while keeping the overall weight down. Even though it was designed to be movable, I didn’t want it feeling flimsy or temporary.
That decision paid off.
During the December 2025 windstorm that hit the Troy area, I’ll admit I was a little concerned it might tip over. But it stood strong and handled the wind like a champ. That’s always a good feeling as a builder.
When the Dig Crew Didn’t Show
The original plan was for my client’s helpers, affectionately referred to as “the hulks,” to dig the new pit before installation. They were scheduled to complete it the Friday prior.
Saturday morning, I got a call.
They hadn’t shown up.
It’s unfortunate when plans fall through, but part of being a dependable handyman in Troy, MT is adapting when things change. I let her know I could take care of the digging as well, and we kept the project moving forward.
Sometimes projects don’t go exactly as planned, but that’s where experience and flexibility matter.
